Fortunate Coincidences – Lars Göran Johansson Collection

Turku Art Museum, Turku, Finland, 15 September 2023 – 7 January 2024

The word “serendipity” is primarily used in science but also has some relevance in other areas of life. When it comes to collecting art, the concept is very significant for Lars Göran Johnsson. It refers to the ability to make fortuitous, unexpected discoveries within a field where the discoverer has extensive knowledge. Regarding his acquisition criteria, Johnsson has stated, “The artwork must have something I’ve never seen before. Sometimes, a strong emotional reaction arises before reason has anything to say.” Art is all about love and passion for Johnsson. The driving force is a strong longing for beauty and a desire to learn something new every day. Gallery visits, conversations with artists and professionals in the art industry are an integral part of his everyday life, alongside these fortunate coincidences.

Selected Works from Galerie Anhava Artists

Galerie Anhava, Helsinki, Finnland, 25 March – 11 April 2021

Galerie Werner Klein, Cologne, Germany, 17 February – 20 March 2021

The attraction of a group exhibition lies in the coexistence of many different works of art. It is precisely in the comparison, in seeing them together, that specific artistic modes of expression are revealed to the viewer particularly well in the current exhibition, and at the same time general questions emerge. What are the concepts behind the works? What strategies are employed in their realization? What is the significance of chance in the process of finding a picture, and what is the significance of precisely following self-imposed rules? How do the artists balance emptiness and fullness?

Hän (She/He/They)

Galerie Anhava, Helsinki, Finland, 28 November – 20 December 2019

Anne Koskinen has now made a series of torsos whose main message is the acceptance of diversity and difference — like in public swimming baths, where people of all shapes, children and the elderly, men, women and others can swim about in the same water, accepted by themselves and others. The works in the Underground space in the basement take as their starting point the fact that the gallery is in the building where Touko Laaksonen, Tom of Finland, lived.

Luonnonkivilohkareet kuvanveistäjän materiaalina

Kari A. Kinnunen. "Luonnonkivilohkareet kuvanveistäjän materiaalina". Johdanto Anne Koskisen näyttelyn "Solo" kiviin, Galerie Anhava, Helsinki, 7.-31.8.2014

Geologian erikoistutkijan näkökulma Anne Koskisen kiviveistoksiin. “Geologille lohkareet ovat kallioperän kappaleina kuin aikakirjan lehtiä, joihin on taltioitunut Maan historiaa.”

Galerie Anhava, Helsinki, Finland, 7 – 31 August 2014

Anne Koskinen (born 1969) continues her work of sculpting ”back yard” stones. One of her themes involves works called Findlings – referring to both foundlings and boulders moved by the ice sheet of the last Ice Age. Koskinen looks for natural stones in her nearby environment with emerging features of images on them. In these works, she is particularly fascinated by the question of how material turns into an image, both an everyday consideration and an endless source of wonderment for an artist creating images by hand. How are an abstract, invisible concept and a visible, concrete and sensual image connected?

Lohkareet kuvanveistäjän materiaalina

Kari A. Kinnunen. "Lohkareet kuvanveistäjän materiaalina". Mineralia 2/2014. 20-21.

“Kuvanveistäjälle kivi on perinteisesti tärkeä materiaali. Miten hän näkee raakakivessä sen sisältämät mahdollisuudet? Kuvanveistäjä Anne Koskinen käyttää veistoksiinsa kotipaikkansa Karunan luonnon kivenlohkareita.”

The Nuclear Physicist's Apple

The Finnish State Art Commission, VTT Centre for Nuclear Safety, Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland

What would a nuclear physicist do, if presented with an apple? Isaac Newton is said to have discovered gravity upon seeing an apple falling from a tree. A sculptural installation stands outside the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland’s Centre for Nuclear Safety. It features apples, hewn from stone, that seem to have appeared from nowhere.

No Time for Lover

Galerie Anhava, Helsinki, Finland, 6 –30 September 2012

Koskinen occasionally receives emails from a Chinese company offering assistance in making sculptures to give the artist more time for travel or to be with her family or lover. But to delegate sculpting does not suit Koskinen’s manner of working. Many important solutions emerge during the work and concern the properties of the material. Therefore, Anne Koskinen makes her sculpture herself.
